October is taking hold of Copenhagen and bringing with it a wild potpourri of sunshine, wind, rain, and events to the Danish capital. On sunny days, soak up all the vitamin D with the last markets and outdoor events of the season. On wet days, put on your best raincoat, hop on a bikes, and brave the storm for a day spent in a gallery with plenty of exhibition openings.
Remember, October marks the beginning of hygge season, so spare some time for candle shopping while making the most of all that Copenhagen has to offer this month.

World Press Photo Exhibition at Politikens Hus
Experience and learn about the stories behind some of the world’s best press photos at this exhibition at Politikens Hus. The exhibition can be visited Monday to Friday from 3-9 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Tickets are available online via politiken.dk.

Villao Pop-Up at Atelier September
Villao is a Danish brand with and unconditional love for simple durable design in cashmere, silk, wool and cotton. They have an exclusive pop-up shop at Atelier September, drop by and meet the founder Elizabeth Villao.

The annual Copenhagen Architecture Festival investigates the role and impact of architecture in our lives and the world we live in. The festival presents a broad public program of talks, films, performances, workshops, seminars, and exhibitions in collaboration with various institutions and (inter)national partners. Thursday 1st – Saturday 10th October
The Effect at Krudttønden
The Effect is a play by Lucy Prebble about a clinical romance. Two young volunteers, Connie and Tristan, agree to take part in a trial testing new antidepressant medication – with potentially life-changing results. Succumbing to the gravitational pull of attraction, they fall in love. But is it real love? Or is it the effect of the medication? The play will run from 1st-10th October at Krudttønden and tickets are on sale now.

Big Tasty Bingo – Payday Edition at Reffen
Play, win, and drink ice-cold pitchers at Reffen. The fun begins at 7pm and participation is free. There is a limited amount of space for the event and it is first come, first served.
Saturday 3rd October
Poesi uden grænser 2020
Join the fifth edition of Poesi Uden Grænser, an atmospheric lyric event that mixes words and poetry from six different countries in the literature salon NordOrd. The program offers poetry with roots in Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iraq, Iceland, and Syria. From 3-5 pm. Tickets are available from 45 DKK via Billetto.
Oplev Københavns Nye Broer
Get to know Copenhagen’s new bridges on this stroll along Christianshavn’s canals. Between Strandgade and Operaen, you will find no less than 13 bridges. The tour ends on Grønlandske Handels Plads where you can grab a bite at Broens Gadekøkken. From 11 am to 3 pm.
ÅBEN Ø – Udforsk livet i havet on Ungdomsøen
Come out and explore Øresund’s pantry on Ungdomsøen from 11 am to 3.15 pm.
The island’s young residents will do tours of the fort and there will be fishing in the sound, activity runs about life in and on the sea and in addition, there will be a bonfire, so you can taste the sound’s pantry. Participation is free. All you have to do is prepare a small supplementary packed lunch and order a ferry ticket to the island at 11 am and return at 3.15 pm at SparShipping.
Pedro Costa: Fontainhas at Cinemateket
Experience the acclaimed Portuguese film director Pedro Costa’s Fontainhas series and meet him at a unique marathon-event. Before and after the screenings of “Colossal Youth” and “Vitalina Varela,” Pedro Costa and professor of Urban Sociology AbdouMaliq Simone talk about the creation of the films, time and space, body politics, and the act of creating an existence as an immigrant and unwanted on the edge of society. AbdouMaliq Simone is a notable thinker within critical urban studies and has lived many years in Africa and has researched migration and urban marginalization. The event takes place in English.

Cykelworkshops – lær at reparere din cykel
The bike is a Copenhagener’s best friend and trusted ally. Learn how to get it back in shape in this workshop series by Københavns Kommune and Buddha Bikes. This edition focuses on adjusting and troubleshooting brakes, on October 21st it will be all about gears. From 1 to 3 pm. Participation is free.

Børnebiffen at Cinemateket
Copenhagen Short Film Festival is co-presenting Børnebiffen at Cinemateket. Bring the little ones and get ready to meet funny characters and to travel to distant worlds.

En after med Anders Refn at Cinemateket
Anders Refn’s Strømer is considered a breakthrough in Danish film due to its realism and raw style. With Slægten and Sort Høst, Refn further directed award-winning film adaptations of Gustav Wied novels. His latest film De Forbandede År is an entertaining drama about the Danes’ reaction to the occupation in 1940. The evening begins with a talk by Anders Refn about his work as well as experiences in the Danish and international film and TV world. After a break and a glass of wine in the Asta Bar, De Forbandede År is streamed. The event begins at 7 pm and tickets are available online.

Czech Embassy: Capricious Summer (Rozmarné léto) at Husets Biograf
Released during Prague Spring 1968, Jiri Menzel’s film Capricious Summer is a humorous take on the attractiveness of the things one can not have. The screening is a part of the ongoing monthly series “Czech Film Nights,” hosted by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Copenhagen and dedicated to presenting the best of Czech cinema. All films are presented with English subtitles. Doors open at 6.30 and the screening starts at 7.30 pm. Tickets cost 60 DKK and can be paid in cash or with mobile pay.

From October 9th, over 1,900 square meters of ILLUM’s 4th floor will be dedicated to the Japanese lifestyle brand MUJI, Scandinavia’s favourite ‘no brand’ brand for every part of your home. Since its launch in 1980, MUJI has positioned itself as the antithesis of ‘consumer society’ and excess, instead focusing on simplicity and usefulness.

If you haven’t seen the wonderful exhibition “Fantastiske Kvinder” at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art yet then this might be your chance. Join fellow art enthusiasts on this trip to the famous museum in Humlebaek from 2 – 6 pm. Bring paper and pencil in case you get inspired and want to do some sketches and get ready to exchange thoughts and ideas with the rest of the group. The trip is free of charge but you need to pay for the museum entrance.
Copenhagen Short Film Festival Award + New Danish Shorts under 25 years
This evening is dedicated to the young Danish talents in both fiction and documentary films. The short films in this program are all embedded in the youthful perspective and navigate complicated emotional lives, relationship constellations, and mediated realities. All the films are nominated for the Best Danish Short Film Under 25 Years award. After the films, there will be a short ceremony. The majority of the films are screened with English subtitles.

År 2019-2049: Blade Runner-aften + middag at Cinemateket
Blade Runner fans, this one’s for you! Watch both Blade Runner feature films together with the three short films, which depict the time between 2019-2049. In case you get hungry, the team serves noodles with meatball, poached egg, mushrooms, and Bok Choy. From 5 to 11:15 pm.

Film, Tapas & cocktails: The Talented Mr Ripley

Meze & Greek wine pop up

MIX Copenhagen
Born in 1986, MIX Copenhagen is Denmark’s oldest recurring film festival and one of the world’s oldest LGBTQ+ film festivals. There will be a number of screenings that bend gender and break sexual boundaries at Cinemateket and Empire Bio. Tickets are available from 75 DKK.

Clara at Store Vega
Danish singer Clara is coming to Store Vega. Since her debut album in 2018 she has won the DMA award for “Årets Nye Danske Navn“ and on her latest album she sings about growing up, love and much more. Doors open at 7 pm and the concert starts at 8 pm. Tickets cost 225 DKK.

MIX CPH: How to Get Your Queer Foot in the Door // Panel
It’s not easy to make it in the film industry. This is especially true for queer filmmakers who often face additional obstacles in an industry that is dominated by hetero-cis men. This panel aims at opening up a discourse and supporting filmmakers with tools to handle situations they may face. The panel will be held in English and is only open to accreditation holders.
Kildevæld Klimafestival
Come and be inspired on how to contribute to a greener future. Kildevæld Kulturcenter has gathered some local green initiatives for a day in the spirit of climate. Come and make homemade chalk, hanging plant holders from recycled materials, or learn to upcycle your old clothes with natural prints. There will be both a bonfire and Østerbro Local Committee that will come with a pancake cart. From 10 am – 2 pm.

Meeting our Monsters at Kunsthal Charlottenborg
Meet your monsters and look at the monster and the monstrous from artistic-literary perspectives. The symposia asks questions like what happens to our gaze and narratives when we incorporate the monster as a part of ourselves and addresses topics like death and trauma. There will be talks, performances, and conversations, as well as a small text collection with an excerpt from Kristen Alvanson and poems by Hiromi Itō. Most of the participants will join digitally, and there is a very limited number of seats available. The symposia will be live-streamed and a podcast will be produced by THE LAKE. From 5-9 pm.

Lolita for altid at Teater Republique
In a mix of performance and concert, “Lolita for Altid” navigates topics such as gender, body, identity, and sexuality. From 8-9.15 pm. There will be an additional performance on Saturday 31st October.

The Savage Rose at Store Vega
The Savage Rose’s hit album Black Angel is turning 25 years old, come and celebrate at Store Vega! The band has been around since 1967 with their characteristic sound that Berlingske calls “Livsblues”. Experience them live from 9 pm. Doors open at 8 pm and tickets cost 330 DKK.

Temaomvisning: Fredensborgmaleriets Festklædte Verdensdamer
Every Sunday in October, you can join this special guided tour dedicated to the Fredensborg painting. The painting from 1883 has just been restored this year. Some of the spectacular dresses which are worn on the art piece are exhibited, including Kejserinde Dagmar’s and Dronning Alexandras’ party dresses from the National Museum’s collection. The tour takes 1.5 hours and tickets cost 140 DKK.
SMK KOM – Øv dit danske!
SMK KOM is a weekly meeting to talk about art, practice Danish, and meet new people. The event is free, and admission to the museum is complimentary when you participate. No registration needed, just come by! Every Wednesday from 4-7 pm. The meting point is the sculpture street.
Housewife Roast by The Caribbean Housewife
The Caribbean Housewife reopens for the fifth winter season at Slagtehusgade 5C! From October 7th, your Wednesday dinner plans should include her 4-course menu in a hygge living room atmosphere. Tickets have to be pre-booked and are available from 250 DKK per person on the website.
Esben Weile Kjær: Power Play at Kunstforeningen GL Strand
Power Play is an investigation of the nightclub; its aesthetic, hierarchy, and authorities. Kjær explores club culture as well as the night club as a cultural and socioeconomic phenomenon. The exhibition is on display until 14th October.
Afgang: MFA Degree Show at Kunsthal Charlottenborg
Afgang, the annual exhibition for the graduates from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts, is taking over Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Each of the 28 participating graduates contributes individually and the works are a presentation of the individual artists’ working process over the last six years. The exhibition will be on display from 12th September until 18th October.
Ragna Braase: Textile, graphics, sandal at SMK
SMK presents an extensive solo exhibition of Ragna Braase’s works, comprising painting, graphic arts, and textiles. The Danish artist who spent many years in France was known and respected among her peers, but like many other female artists of her time she never achieved wider recognition. Get inspired by her architectural, oriental and cosmic dream visions. Until 18th October.
Fantastic Women at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Get to know the great women of Surrealism! While several male surrealists, such as Magritte, Dalí, Miró, and Max Ernst, remain widely known and celebrated, few are familiar with female surrealist artists. “Fantastic Women – Surreal Worlds” is the first comprehensive presentation of 34 women surrealist artists from Europe, the US, and Mexico, among them Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington. The exhibition is a collaboration with Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and is on display until 8th November.
Per Kirkeby at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Louisiana presents the first-ever comprehensive presentation of the bronzes of Per Kirkeby. Monumental and powerful, it takes up the museum’s entire West Wing and unfolds as an almost epic tale about creative struggle, downfall, mythology, and artistic redemption. The exhibition is on display until 6th December.
UNBOXING: The Goodiepal Collection
Faroese artist and electronica composer Goodiepal is unboxing his collection of sound art at SMK. The collection is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Featuring six themed rooms, the exhibition invites you to explore a wealth of sound art by artists from Denmark and elsewhere. Until 6th December.
Hesper Just: Circuits (Interpassivities) at SMK
Renowned Danish artist Jesper Just’s installation is full of circuits: the circuit of bodies, the circuit between music and body, and the circuit between the individual parts of the fragmented image. Electricity, music and bodies, sensitivity, and control: all these aspects shift inside the wider circuit of people, things, and technology. The exhibition is on display until 31st December.
Tal R.: Animals and People at Glyptoteket
From 18th June, the Glyptoteket exhibits the Danish artist Tal R’s sizable series of new bronze sculptures and plaster works. While Tal R has always moved between genres, his bronze sculptures represent a new chapter in his oeuvre. The exhibition will be presented in the Vilhelm Dahlerup building, the oldest part of the museum, and is on display until January 2021.
Modern Women at Kunstforeningen GL Strand
This exhibition puts the spotlight on four modernist female artists from Finland. In their work, Helene Schjerfbeck, Elga Sesemann, Sigrid Schauman, and Ellen Thesleff interpret modern life and the modern woman in particular. The exhibition displays several works of all four painters and addresses the lack of recognition of women in society as well as the art world. On display until 2nd January.
Tetsumi Kudo: Cultivation at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Japanese artist Tetsumi Kudo was a radical and visionary outsider who is currently being rediscovered internationally as his work appears highly relevant in the cultural and political agendas of today. Shaped by his childhood in Japan in the aftermath of the atomic bomb, Kudo addresses topics such as humanity’s self-destruction and ecological decadence. The exhibition will be on display until January 2021.
Anupama Kundoo at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
In the fourth exhibition in The Architect’s Studio series, the Indian architect Anupama Kundoo aims to shed light on a scarce resource in our life: time. Constructed as a journey through time, the exhibition explores and integrates traditional Indian building customs, crafts, and materials into Kundoo’s current works. The exhibition is on display until 31st January 2021.
Miriam Cahn at Kunsthal Charlottenborg
In her first major solo exhibition in Denmark, Miriam Cahn presents an expansive body of work in the entire North Wing of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Encompassing works in chalk, charcoal, pastel, and water colour, film, and photography, the exhibition explores the position of women in society today and their continued worldwide fight for basic rights and equality. Some of the works discredit socially constructed clichés about gender roles, other works interrogate the human body and the dynamics of intimacy, exploring the relationship between sex, violence, and power. Miriam Cahn lives and works in Switzerland. The exhibition will be on display until February 21st 2021.
Free Tuesday at Glyptoteket
Every Tuesday, Glyptoteket is free to enjoy. Admire the beautiful sculptures and wander the beautifully colored hallways, Glyptoteket is always a delight. The museum owns one of the finest Rodin collections in the world, alongside impressive works by the likes of the French artists, Carpeaux and Degas. Plus a cafe situated next to the museum’s tranquil palm house.
