It’s easy to romanticise about peddling through the cobble-stoned streets of Santorini, through grassy Tuscan hills or around the bustling canals of Amsterdam, but it’s high time you add Perth to the list. A cycler’s paradise with no shortage of dreamy views and natural beauty spots, there is no better way to soak up Perth’s sunny Autumn days than on two wheels.
Whether you’re a coastal cruiser, a seasoned city slicker, a lycra fanatic or a hipster with a fixie, we have a trail for you. Here are some of Perth's best bike trails.
Marmion To Burns Beach Pack your wicker basket to the brim with your favourite treats and set out for a lovers' cruise along Perth's Northern Beaches. Sunsets over the ocean are the best, so begin your journey in the afternoon to catch the magical moment. Take in the salty sea breeze and enjoy an uninterrupted view as the sun sinks lazily into the Indian Ocean. Keep an eye out for a grassy spot to enjoy a picnic with your main squeeze and then strip down for a cooling dip beneath the pink sky.
Kings Park An oldie but a goodie, take your two-wheeled friend for an adventure through Kings Park and soak up those breathtaking panoramic views that are arguably WA’s finest. Meander through an abundance of cycle paths and explore this super-sized urban pocket (one of the largest on earth) of natural Australian bushland.
Railway Reserves Heritage Trail The picturesque Perth Hills are the perfect place for a cycle enriched with fresh air, wildlife and native flora. The 41km loop extends through one of Perth’s glorious national parks and passes by fields laden with wildflowers and several waterfalls that flow in winter and spring. Take things down a gear and visit one of the neighbouring wineries where the local grapes are calling your name. This is the perfect trail to clear the mind and replenish the soul.
City Cycle Trail If you’re keen to see more of Perth’s city sights, this 27km circuit will tick all the boxes. Starting at Elizabeth Quay you’ll head up to Yagan Square before looping down around Kings Park, back across Mounts Bay Road (yes, you can stop at the super ‘grammable Blue Boathouse), over the Narrows Bridge, through the South Perth Foreshore, by Optus Stadium and over Matagraup Bridge, before returning down Riverside Drive. If you don’t stop you can do it in a couple of hours, but given all the good stuff you’re going past we suggest you set aside more time for food and beverage breaks. Grab a coffee on your way through Perth’s CBD. Pick up supplies and throw down a picnic rug somewhere along South Perth Foreshore. Get off your bike when you hit Optus Stadium and pull into The Camfield for a quick drink and a bowl of chips (c’mon you’ve earned it). And when you finally land back at Elizabeth Quay, you can reward yourself with a scoop of ice cream from Gusto Gelato or a pint from one of the bars—up to you.
Swan River Three Bridges Loop The early bird catches the worm so set your alarm and avoid the repeat snooze to reap the rewards of a morning ride along Perth’s Swan River. There are many routes to take that suit all abilities. Consider yourself a seasoned pedal pusher? We suggest you take on the 43km Three Bridges Loop. Start from the CBD and follow the river to Canning Bridge where you will cross over and make your way back. Yep, all the way back. Bells at the ready, during peak times the river is buzzing with cycling enthusiasts.
Halls Head Coastal Trail Say hi to the dolphins on this 12km coastal cycle trail. Starting at Doddi's Beach on Halls Head Parade in Mandurah, the Halls Head Coastal Trail winds along the coastline where you can quite often catch sightings of dolphins and the occasional seal or whale. There are a few steep hills to tackle but that fresh sea air oughtta keep you going. Don’t worry, once you’re done you can refuel at Mataya—a coastal cool cafe behind a pastel pink door that slings some of the best brunch around.
Fremantle To Point Walter You’re craving adventure and we’re going to give it to you. The trail from Fremantle to Point Walter is sure to satisfy the itch. Starting from Fremantle Station, the leisurely spin is 8.4km to the southern end of the reserve. At low tide you can lock up your bike and walk along the 1km sandbar, otherwise known as Point Walter Spit. There isn't a better way to cool down on a balmy summers day than dipping your tootsies into the sea. On the return trip, bypass The Left Bank for a cheeky sundowner.
Lake Monger Loop An urban wetland nestled between Leederville, Wembley and Glendalough, the Lake Monger Loop is a mere 5km from the city centre. An ideal trail to zip away from your desk and get your daily dose of endorphins. Cruise around the track at your leisure and digest the tranquil surroundings of the lake and birdlife. Let’s not forget, where there is cycling there is coffee. Finish up at Workshop Espresso Cafe in Wembley and order yourself a long macchiato. The cafe is a cyclist’s bestie, nestled within the bike store Wembley Cycles.
Swan Valley Heritage Cycle Trail Brace yourself for a sensory overload on this award-winning bike trail. The scenic 10km end-to-end cycle trail takes in over 150 establishments including wineries, restaurants, lively cafes, microbreweries and distilleries to name a few. There is ample opportunity to relax and admire the gorgeous vineyard surrounds. Sample an array of local delights; whatever your mood you’re sure to find something that hits the spot in this food and wine mecca.
Rottnest Island Round up your bike squad and escape to Rottnest for your much-needed fix of island time. An absolute beauty of a trail made up of hilly sand dunes, the 25km island loop can be cycled in a few hours. The ride is hard work, but the deliciously turquoise coloured beaches make it well worth the effort. Did we mention the island boasts no less than 63 pristine sandy beaches? Be sure to relax in the ocean breeze, let down your hair and soak up that much needed Vitamin D. You can hire a bike on the island or bring your own over on the ferry to save some pennies. Make your final pit stop at Simmo's Icecreamery, a WA classic.
