What is a high five on Peloton?
You’ll see little hands showing up on the left-hand side of the tablet.
This is people giving you a high five.
Other riders will also get notified if you’re hitting a milestone when you log into a ride.
What’s a High Five on Peloton?
When you’re in a class with other people–on the bike, on the Peloton app, on the Tread–you can double tap on a person’s picture to send them a high five.
You do this as a sign of support or ‘you go girl (or guy)’ just to be friendly.
Also, if you happen to be in an On Demand class together, you’ll get notified if your classmates have a milestone.
On the other hand, if you have a milestone for an On Demand class, other people in the class get notified.
So, they want to send you good wishes for your milestone.
Therefore, they send out a high five.
How to high five back
Want to know how to give a high five or high five back on your Peloton?
Tap the hands to give a high-five back.
It’s ok to high five strangers.
Some people I know, who are expecting to get a lot of high fives for a big milestone, will employ help.
That is, when they climb on their bike, they’ll have one of their children standing by to respond to all of the high fives.
I’m serious that people do this.
Also, I think that’s adorable.
Peloton high five etiquette
You may be wondering about the etiquette of Peloton high fives.
Here’s a great thing to keep in mind: no one is judging you.
For example, I don’t keep tabs on who high fives me during a class.
So, if I high five someone and they don’t high five me back, honestly, I don’t even know. And I don’t hold a grudge.
But basic high five etiquette is you should–if you can–high five someone back when they high five you.
Assuming it is appropriate, given the class you are taking.
When not to high five on Peloton
There are a couple of scenarios where I think it’s bad form to send a high five.
For example, I’ll frequently do a sleep meditation class at night before bed.
I do this using the Peloton app on my phone.
As soon as I start the meditation, I can see the other people in class with me.
For example, you can see in the picture above that there were 66 people with me for Ross Rayburn’s five-minute relaxing meditation.
Note the hand outlines next to each person’s username.
This is where I would tap to high five people in this Peloton class.
However, because it’s a meditation class and your eyes are usually closed, high fiving is not a good idea.
Also, you’re meditating to relax your mind.
Worrying about high fiving someone back kind of defeats the purpose, right?
Another time not to high five?
If you’re taking the FTP test.
I mean, if you are in the middle of your FTP test and trying hard to concentrate on holding your zone, high fiving is a bad idea.
Speaking of the FTP test, here is my blog post on Peloton Power Zone.
High five glitches
Sometimes you may find that people are sending multiple high fives.
There have been some bugs in the system lately where people don’t see their high fives going through.
So, they keep tapping their hands to make sure they did go through.
You, on the receiving end, are getting multiple ones.
Just high five back once.
And understand that this person isn’t stalking you or being obnoxious.
In fact, it’s the opposite–they’re just trying to be friendly.
High fives from Peloton instructors
Every once and awhile, you might get a high five from a Peloton instructor.
No, for real, it happens.
You may find yourself, like I did, taking an On Demand class when the very instructor you’re following sends you a high five.
How did they know you were in their class?
I’ve always wondered if there is some sort of notification that only instructors get.
Anyway, it’s super cool when it happens.
So far I’ve gotten high fives in an On Demand class from Tunde as well as Matt Wilpers.
Oh, also Christine during one of her own On Demand classes that she told people she would be riding with them.
Final thoughts on how to high five on Peloton
It’s frustrating that you cannot high five when doing a class on your Roku TV or on your computer aka the Peloton website.
Maybe Peloton will fix this in the future.
Finally, if you have other questions about high fives that I didn’t answer, please let me know.
